Why Avoid A Tunnel Wash

Maximize Your Time

Tunnel car washes can make you spend significant time cleaning up the parts were missed or weren’t properly cleaned. Bug parts, tar, and other sticky parts will not come off from a general car wash. They need to be repeatedly treated and wiped off to be completely removed. Additional issues like door sills, rim crevices, grilles, and wheel liners cannot be properly cleaned by tunnel washes. Instead of cleaning these yourself, hand car washes are experienced at cleaning these areas efficently and effectively while you are able to spend your time on what matters most important to you. Additionally, hand washes keep your vehicle clean for longer. Utilizing paint sealants and good washing techniques keep dirt off your vehicle. While tunnel washes use harsh chemicals that strip away any sealants used to protect the vehicle’s paint. A paint surface with no sealant allows dirt and heavy contaminants like metal dust, sap, or water spots to attach to the paint more effectively. Any waxes or sealants that an automatic tunnel wash offers do not work because they need to be buffed into the car’s paint (during the drying process) to properly adhere.

Hazardous Chemical Use

Tunnel car washes use extremely corrosive chemicals to compensate for the lack of precision that their automatic brushes have. Hot dryers and blowers will dry these corrosive chemicals on your paints surface and wear down the clear coat. Additionally, hazardous chemical use is a problem for the community and environment. Chemical run off from a tunnel wash can seep into the storm water system, and eventually rivers and ecosystems. Hand car washes avoid all of this by using pH Neutral and biologically safe car cleaning liquids. You, nor the enviroment will be negatively impacted by a hand car wash.

Your car will get damaged

Tunnel wash wheel cleaners use mechanical systems and brushes that do not utilize any sensors. This means if you have a low car your bumper will certainly be hit by a hard plastic guide bracket meant to align the wheel brush with the edge of the car’s wheel. In doing this, if there is little ground clearance on your front bumper, the wheel brush will dent your front bumper. Additionally, the stiff bristles on the wheel brushes will also scratch the lower portion of your car’s paint surface (this is why many car’s start rusting at the bottom).

Other vehicles are uncontrollable

Drivers of other cars cannot be controlled. There is a higher risk going into a tunnel car wash and colliding with another vehicle because many people distract themselves after entering a tunnel car wash with their phone or a conversation. Drivers can press on their brakes (and collide with others), shift gears (and drive into another car), or turn their wheel and derail off the track (and crash into equipment). Tunnel car washes have multiple incidents like these every week.

Scratches and swirls will happen

The brushes in tunnel car washes press hard against your car and are rough enough to swirl and scratch the clear coat on your car’s paint. This problem with tunnel washes has been covered extensively. But, the issue cannot be downplayed because of the detrimental effects it has on car paint. The motions of the tunnel wash brushes combined with their abrasive texture will wear down clear coat completely after repeated use of tunnel washes.

Rusty and muddy vehicles

Tunnel car washes frequently receive business from extremely rusty or muddy cars. Every day, a tunnel car wash will have multiple rusty cars go through. A $500 rusty sedan may go through. Shortly after, a $300K ultra luxury SUV will go through. Every car that goes through a tunnel wash will be washed with the same brushes. The brushes will accumulate dirt, small pieces of gravel, chunks of rust, and on occasion trim pieces and plastic parts. The fabric brushes are not washed or cleaned by tunnel car washes. This means any car going through a tunnel wash will come in contact with debris from previous vehicles. At TDD Chicago, we use fresh wash mitts and cloths on each client’s car. No debris from previous cars will touch a different car.
